Two Penalties See Lazio Past Atalanta
Lazio-Atalanta 3-0
Two penalties by Tommaso Rocchi and a goal by Goran Pandev allowed Lazio to breeze past Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico in what was an easy afternoon for the Biancocelesti.

After the 1-0 loss away to Empoli last week, Lazio needed a morale boost in the home match against Atalanta, who are still in the hunt for a Uefa Cup spot.
It was expected to be a close run match, but in the end Lazio picked up a comfortable 3-0 victory courtesy of two clear spot kicks converted by Tommaso Rocchi, and a goal by Macedonian striker Goran Pandev.
Lazio tried to take control of the match from the start, but initially struggled to create chances against a well-organised Atalanta side. The first chance came in the 6th minute, when Pandev found Rocchi, who made a run towards goalkeeper Ferdinando Coppola, but he shot the ball straight to the keeper.
Lazio almost shot themselves in the foot in the 15th minute, when Valon Behrami played a soft back-pass to goalkeeper Marco Ballotta, but he managed to come off his line in time to clear the danger before Simone Floccari could take advantage.
In the 25th minute, the home team opened the score courtesy of a penalty awarded after Coppola brought down Cristian Manfredini. Rocchi stepped up and coolly side-footed the ball past the goalkeeper.
After that goal, the match still didn’t really come alive as Lazio did not really push forward for a second. The next chance came in the 40th minute, when Rocchi found Manfredini in the area with a great pass, but the referee stopped the play for a non-existant offside position.
Shortly before the break, Atalanta won a dangerous free kick from the edge of the area. Captain Cristiano Doni stepped up to take it, and Ballotta had to come up with a great reflex to keep it from dipping in just under the crossbar (43’). A rather uneventful first half finished with the home side on a 1-0 lead.
Second Half
Early in the second half, Atalanta had a decent chance as a cross by Doni was deflected on the path of substitute Guarente by Sebastiano Siviglia, and the midfielder’s volley went just over the crossbar (48’). That was the Nerazzurri’s best chance of the match.
Lazio immediately responded with a shot by Cristian Ledesma from 25 meters which went just over the crossbar. The home side managed to double the lead out of nothing in the 56th minute, when Pandev latched onto a long pass and beat the offside trap, before getting the ball past Coppola in two attempts.
Ballotta was called into action again in the 66th minute, as he brilliantly parried away a volley by Doni on a cross by Fernando Tissone. Following the second goal, Lazio let Atalanta come at them, but they visitors rarely made themselves dangerous. Moreover, Ballotta was looking unbeatable on goal, as in the 77th minute when he punched away another volley by Doni on an assist by substitute Simone Inzaghi.
Two minutes before the end, Lazio were given an opportunity to make it 3-0 as they were awarded a penalty after Giampaolo Bellini tripped substitute Rolando Bianchi inside the area, Rocchi took the second spot-kick as well and smashed it past Coppola with a terrific shot.
In the final few minutes Lazio played the ball around easily until the final whistled, when they were able to celebrate a deserved and surprisingly easy victory. However, Atalanta were also clearly having an off day and never looked like they would take something from the game. With this win Lazio are in 12th place with 26 points, while Atalanta are 9th with 30 points, 6 away from a Uefa Cup spot.
