Pre-match
The main news from Mark Hughes’ first competitive team sheet is that Club record signing Jo Alves starts upfront for the Blues.
Another pre-match point for discussion was the fact that our referee is a woman…Switzerland’s Nicole Petignat…but should that be a problem or indeed a talking point at all?
The Match
It was a good even start to the game with the hosts having the first effort on goal just a couple of minutes in. The tame Foldgast shot from distance though failed to trouble Joe Hart.
City quickly got into the game and the balance soon tipped the way of the Premier League side.
On six minutes, the Blues produced a great move involving Jo, Michael Johnson and Martin Petrov, before the Bulgarian’s cross led to Darius Vassell stretching to head goalwards but he was denied by a great save from Torgard.
Then just three minutes later the deadlock was broken. Another swift City move saw Vassell cut infield from the right and roll the ball across to Johnson, he cleverly dummied, taking out two EB/Streymur defenders in the process and Martin Petrov hammered home from the corner edge of the box.
The Blues continued to run the game and eventually gave themselves the cushion of a second goal on 28 minutes. Petrov’s corner was cleared to the edge of the box, where the unlikely figure of Didi Hamann stepped into a fine strike that flew past the keeper, certainly two early contenders for goal of the season!
After 34 minutes Petrov eased past the EB/Streymur full back and put in yet another dangerous cross, clearly a Mark Hughes tactic, which gave Jo an opportunity. His diving header went just wide though after some physical marking by the centre half.
The game eased up towards half time and as the whistle blew for the break I’m sure some of the home side released a sigh or two of relief for the 15 minutes respite which was to come.
HALF TIME: EB/Streymur 0-2 City
No changes during that rest for either side, but Mm Petignat did have to take the name of Michael Johnson on 48 minutes following a rash challenge on Arnbjorn Hansen.
The Faroese team showed plenty of desire to get back into the game as we reached the hour mark, indeed the Blues had come under a fair amount of pressure, which required Hart and his defenders to take some evasive action.
City soaked up the hosts’ pressure and almost made it 3-0 on 71 minutes. Petrov, a constant menace to the home side all night, hit a fine left footed drive from over 25-yards out that landed on the top of the net.
Shortly afterwards, Mark Hughes made his first substitutions of the night. Fresh from signing his new contract, Ched Evans replaced Jo, after a good debut performance. Swiss midfielder Gelson Fernandes replaced Hamann to make his first appearance for his new boss.
With nine minutes remaining Evans almost scored after a fine strike on the spin, but his half-volley just flew wide, with Torgard at full stretch.
The final whistle was greeted with warm applause and City’s players could be satisfied with a comfortable night’s work.
And with another 90 minutes to come at Barnsley’s Oakwell in two weeks time the Blues look all set for a place in the next round of UEFA Cup qualifiers.
