City new boy Bacary Sagna issues apology to Pablo Zabaleta

Former Arsenal defender admits he was wrong in 2011 altercation - but now he wants Argentinian's spot at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal's Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta clash in a head butt, resulting in a red card for both players.

Bacary Sagna has started his City career with an apology to one of his new team-mates.

In January 2011 Sagna and fellow right-back Pablo Zabaleta were both sent off for a vitriolic altercation during a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium.

At the time Sagna – who was playing for Arsenal – said verbal abuse from the Argentinian sent him over the edge.

But on his arrival at the Blues, City’s new recruit explained other off-field events clouded his judgement that day.

And he also revealed Zabaleta was the first person to welcome him to the club when he arrived at the Blues’ Carrington training base.

“I’ll say I was wrong,” Sagna said.

“I understand Spanish and he said something I believed it was towards me, but it was not obviously.

“I just lost someone in my family and was not in a good shape, or a good frame of mind. I was too upset to talk to him after the game. It was a very emotional day for me.

“I had lost my brother, I was in a difficult moment.

“He said something and, okay, he didn’t mean to say it to me but I took it personally, I lost the plot.

“I know he’s a nice guy and was the first one to come over to me at training. He is always making jokes and smiling. We have not talked about it since I came here but I have met him a few times since then. If I get the chance one day I will explain to him.

“It’s in the past, I made a mistake and I apologise. It’s one of the only times I have lost my cool, but I had just lost someone in my family. I didn’t talk to anyone and kept everything inside.

"So when it happened I just went crazy. Now I’m in a good place. It’s part of life and I’m okay.”

Sagna now finds himself in direct competition with Zabaleta again, but hopefully a healthier sort this time.

The 31-year-old has swapped the Emirates for the Etihad after a six-year spell with the Gunners to ease the pressure on City’s Argentinian stalwart.

And he is hoping the change of scene will ensure his career finishes with a flourish rather than fizzles out.

He added: “I love it. I think it’s the right move for me. I needed a change in my life. I needed a boost, so I’m loving it and looking forward to a great season.

“Yes, it’s not an easy move because it is a team which already has a very good right-back in Zabaleta.

“I know the fans love him, but this is the right challenge for me because I felt a bit in a comfort zone at Arsenal.

“I needed to challenge myself, I needed the right move and I know I will have to fight and train really hard to get into the team.

"I know this already, so it’s not going to come as a surprise to me. It was the same when I joined Arsenal.”

Sagna is treading a well-worn path from Arsenal to City.

olo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri have moved north in recent seasons and received a volley of abuse from Gunners fans in the process.

But Sagna has made a staunch defence of his time in London and says he is not at City for a final pay-day.

“It is not easy to read some comments on social networks,” he said.

“I know it’s only a small minority and not all the Arsenal fans, but it’s still not easy to read it because I feel I gave everything.

“I have been fair because I have respected my contract. I spent six years on the same contract and never went to ask for more.

“It’s not about the money. Can you find one player in Europe who stayed six years on the same contract? That’s what I did and I never asked for anything.

“If I was the first one then okay, but I don’t know what to think. Every time a player leaves they seem to get abuse. But that doesn’t represent the whole Arsenal family.

“To me I made the right choice and I’m very happy to be here no matter what they think.

“I am not the first one to leave their club and I won’t be the last one. I’m looking at my personal life now and I want to fight, get in the team and give the maximum. I don’t look at the negatives.”

Sagna’s arrival fits into boss Manuel Pellegrini’s blueprint of two top players in each position, but he has had no assurances over his playing time.

“He (Pellegrini) has not said anything,” said Sagna.

“I just have to perform because he is going to chose the one who is in form, not the one who has just come or who has been with the team a long time. I think we’re just going to have to give our maximum every game.

“I came to bring the maximum as I did with Arsenal and I will give the maximum every time I am given the chance to play.

“Zabaleta played a lot last season, give him some credit.

“He played on the right, the left and when the season gets going you have to play every three days.

“Sometimes you need a rest we will see what happens but I am not here to fight against him, I’m just here to bring something to the team.

“I’ll give the maximum game by game. That’s what I do.”
