STEPHEN IRELAND has signed a new five-year deal to stay at City.

And the club’s reigning player of the season and second top scorer immediately promised not to rest on his laurels or take his status in the side for granted and firmly backed Mark Hughes to take the club to heights not seen in the modern era.

The 22-year-old believes that by the time his new deal is expiring the Blues could well be established as title contenders and that he may be on his way to breaking into the club’s all-time top ten appearance list.

Ireland has more than doubled his wages into the £60,000 per week basic bracket but has been worth every penny in a season that has seen him establish himself as firm favourite amongst teammates and supporters.

The midfielder was quick to thank manager Hughes for the part he has played in allowing him to flourish and tipped the boss to establish a winning dynasty at City.

“Next season it will be interesting to see how far we can push on,” said Ireland.

“Maybe we can even compete at the top of the table. We will be able to put all our efforts and attentions into the league campaign and trying to win the FA Cup or the Carling Cup.

“Trophies have got to be our ambition. We all want to achieve things here.

Ambitious

“I have signed for five years and I think City can be anywhere we want to be at the end of that period.

“Every player here is ambitious and wants to achieve big things and I know the manager and his coaching staff feel the same way too.

“We have set ourselves good targets as a group for next season. I am already excited about the future and can’t wait to get going again.

“We sense in the dressing room that there is a real plan in place for this whole club. That there is a full package and it is about developing every area of City for us to be a better team and for the fans to enjoy watching us more.

“Ever since I was a kid I have always wanted to play under a manager with whom I had a great relationship and who would have an understanding about what I am about. I feel that Mark Hughes is that manager. I have not had that before.

“Since he came here there has been an understanding and a vision of how I can develop and where I can fit into the team. Hopefully he will be here a long time and build something really special.

“The manager has set me free on the pitch and that has helped me loads. He has shown faith and trust in me. Previously I have been stuck out on the left or the right and from there you can only go one way and you are limited but Mark Hughes allows me and the other midfielders freedom of movement and expression. I love being able to be all-action and get about the pitch. I love losing myself in the game that is when I play at my best. We are allowed to interchange at will behind the striker and that keeps defenders on their toes.

“Some managers you look at and think ‘well they can’t take a club any further’ but that is not the case with ours he has the right drive and ambition to take us to where we want to go and I think it is important that he stays and that the board have backed him.”
