Manchester City are being linked with a shock move for Liverpool's Xabi Alonso.

Alonso is widely expected to join Real Madrid in the near future, but, according to The Daily Mail, City have been encouraged by the fact that the midfielder wants to leave Liverpool, and could put in a bid of their own.

However, Mark Hughes acknowledges that Alonso is unlikely to want to move to Eastlands, especially after holding out for a move to the Bernabeu for so long.

However, the one advantage City have is that they could potentially trump any Real Madrid offer for the player, both in terms of fee and wages.

Liverpool are thought to want around £35million for Alonso, but that is a reduced figure arrived at after weeks of negotiations.
