Young defender's new contract came as something as a surprise to fans, but he is out to prove that he deserves to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

Dedryck Boyata has been given a new lease of life at City – and he aims to make the most of it.

The two-year contract handed to the young Belgian was perhaps City’s most surprising deal of the summer, as he has failed to make an impression on the first team squad in the last three seasons.

Four years ago, he had the world at his feet, after being given his big break by Roberto Mancini, and even forcing his way into the Belgium squad alongside club-mate Vincent Kompany.

But this summer, more than a few City fans raised an eyebrow when they heard the 23-year-old had been handed a new deal – and is now set to start the season vying with Matija Nastasic to be fourth choice centre back.

There is little doubt that the straitjacket of Uefa’s financial fair play punishment, which restricted the Blues to a 21-man squad in this season’s Champions League, worked in Boyata’s favour.

He is one of just two club-trained players in the first team squad and the other one, Micah Richards, is expected to be sold before the end of this transfer window.

That means Boyata will ensure the Blues have a full complement of 21 players in the competition.

The youngster admits that Uefa’s punishment probably had an influence on the fact he was awarded a new deal but he is also adamant manager Manuel Pellegrini would not have sanctioned it had he not seen untapped potential.

“Maybe it is good news for me, but I have been part of the team for quite a long time, and this year might be a year when I get more games,” he said.

“It’s not my decision what will happen but I have been here a long time and I work hard every day, even in pre-season, right now. I am just hoping to get as many games as possible and if the boss is prepared to play me I am ready to give 100 per cent.”

The Brussels-born centre half is the last surviving member of the 2008 FA Youth Cup-winning side, but since he made the breakthrough in 2010, his career with City has not run smoothly.

He began 2010-11 as an integral squad member but had little involvement after a red card five minutes into a home clash with Arsenal that led to a 3-0 defeat.

The following season he was sent to Bolton on loan. But with Wanderers spiralling towards relegation, Boyata was consistently played out of position at right back by manager Owen Coyle.

The following season Steve McClaren took him to FC Twente on what was intended to be a season-long loan, but he could not nail down a place.

Last season he was back in the shadows at City, making one league appearance, one in the FA Cup and four in the League Cup. But the departure of Joleon Lescott and uncertainty over Nastasic means Boyata remains and played the full 90 minutes in Sunday’s Community Shield – and he insists he will prove he is worth his place in the squad.

“I have had some bad luck, and some of the choices I have made since I broke through four years ago, like the loans, have not been the best,” admitted Boyata.

“When you play in a big team you have big players around you and that makes it easier. I went on loan and didn’t play in my favourite position, and didn’t play as many games as I wanted.

“You go on loan expecting to play as many games as possible, because they promise to do that, but when you get there and it’s not actually what’s happening, then you have no choice but to be there and try to work hard.

“That’s what I did but obviously it hasn’t been the best time.

“I didn’t choose the best clubs to go to, but now I am back and played in the Community Shield. Everything that is in the past, I am leaving in the past and thinking only of season 2014-15.”

Boyata said that those people outside the club who expressed shock that he landed a new deal did not have any insight.

“Maybe people outside might be surprised, but I have been here a long time and do everything I can, every day in training,” he said. “Players around me know what I can do, and so does the manager. I don’t care what people outside think, it’s about the people on the inside.

“If I have got another two years I can only take it as a positive sign. “

ถ้าผมได้รับสัญญา 2 ปี ผมถือว่าเป็นสัญญานที่ดี
