DID well. Will feel he should have scored early on but caused all sorts of problems early on.

Gets criticised for his defending but looked pretty sound.

Great block late on in normal time to deny Nocerino. 7

JOHN TERRY

YET another strong, committed display at the heart of defence.

Was being tested with long balls and was nearly caught out once before a block to deny Balotelli a goal. 7

JOLEON LESCOTT

ENJOYED a decent tussle with Balotelli.

Made one vital tackle when his City team-mate looked about to score. In general, Lescott will be pleased with his Euro performances. 7

ASHLEY COLE

WILL have enjoyed the opening spell when he had the freedom to move forward and assist Young.

Saw plenty of the ball but also took a bad penalty in the shootout. 6

JAMES MILNER

BETTER display than what we have seen in previous games.

Put in a decent shift but when he hit a decent cross, the strikers did not read it. 6

SCOTT PARKER

DELIVERED more crushing tackles and added some clever passing.

But as the game progressed, he lost possession and was crowded out of the game. 6

STEVEN GERRARD

OUR best player of the tournament. On this occasion, though, he did not take a firm grip of the game.

Hit two good set-pieces but could not unlock Italy defence. 6

ASHLEY YOUNG

ENJOYED a fairly bright opening spell when he saw plenty of the ball.

Suffered a nasty clash of heads with Abate on the hour. Worked hard too but passing was wayward. His miss in the shootout will haunt him. 5

WAYNE ROONEY

NATION held its breath with his overhead kick in injury-time — also fluffed a header.

Generally faded in and out of the game and was nowhere near match-sharp. 5

DANNY WELBECK

A PLAYER with great talent but this was disappointing. Found himself isolated and saw little of the ball.

When he had a chance, he could not find the net. 5

THEO WALCOTT (Milner 61). Hoping to make an impact like he did against Sweden but saw little of the ball. 5
